A Legal Win for Kalshi: Court Rules Against New Jersey’s Attempt to Block Operations

In a significant legal development, prediction market platform Kalshi has emerged victorious in a court battle at the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. The company, facing charges from the Arizona Attorney General’s Office for alleged illegal gambling activities, has been embroiled in a legal tussle that has drawn attention from various quarters.

Kalshi, which has been under scrutiny for offering contracts related to sports events, has been at the center of legal action initiated by the Arizona authorities. This move, however, attracted a lawsuit from the Trump administration, challenging the state’s stance.

The recent ruling by the Third Circuit Court of Appeals marks a pivotal moment, as it determined that New Jersey cannot obstruct Kalshi’s operations related to sports event contracts. The court’s decision hinges on the fact that these contracts fall under the regulatory purview of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, a federal body.

Kalshi has consistently maintained its distinction from traditional sports books, asserting that its operations are governed by federal regulations, thereby placing them beyond the jurisdiction of state-level legal actions, such as those initiated by Arizona.

Despite the ruling, the Arizona Attorney General’s Office has remained reticent, choosing not to provide any comments on the court’s decision.
