Kari Lake’s Political Journey: From Arizona Elections to National Ambitions

Since the rise of Trumpism in American politics, few figures have embodied its tumultuous highs and lows like Kari Lake. Known for her self-styled image as “Trump in heels,” Lake’s political aspirations have faced significant setbacks, including unsuccessful bids for governor and a recent U.S. Senate race loss. As 2024 concluded, Lake found herself navigating unfamiliar political terrain, striving to redefine her public persona.

Journalists Yvonne Wingett Sanchez and Anne Applebaum delve into Lake’s journey in The Atlantic, exploring a key question: What drives Kari Lake? A notable chapter of her story involves her pursuit of influence at the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM).

USAGM Ambitions and Strategic Shifts

YVONNE WINGETT SANCHEZ: “So USAGM essentially runs Voice of America, and it gives grants to entities like Radio Free Asia, the Open Technology Fund, and that helps people access information in places like Russia and Iran. And she felt as though this was a space that she really understood, given her long tenure in the news industry, she had the skill set to be able to do it.”

Initially, Lake aimed to transform USAGM, leveraging her media experience. However, her stance shifted when political pressures called for a reimagining of Voice of America and similar entities. Lake then advocated for significant reductions, resulting in layoffs and operational limitations. Many speculate this move inadvertently boosted state media influence in countries like Russia due to diminished U.S. counter-narratives.

SAM DINGMAN: “Right. And this was in connection with Elon Musk’s efforts with the Department of Government Efficiency. Correct?”

WINGETT SANCHEZ: “Yes.”

Financial Implications and Political Maneuvering

Amidst restructuring, financial scrutiny emerged. A Senate investigation highlighted that from March 15 to July 18, USAGM paid over $69 million to staff not actively working. This fiscal concern continued to grow, with more than 500 employees on paid leave as of last summer.

In another intriguing development, Lake sought a meeting with President Trump last fall, aiming to discuss a Congressional run. Despite her efforts, she was unable to secure an audience with him. This attempt reportedly set off strategic moves within the Arizona Republican Party, including unexpected candidate announcements for competitive seats.

WINGETT SANCHEZ: “She has not announced a run for Congress in Arizona. She has, however, purchased a place in Iowa where she grew up. And that led to speculation that perhaps she was very serious about potentially running for office in that state at some point.”

As Lake contemplates her next political steps, observers remain keenly interested in how her narrative will unfold. For now, her trajectory continues to capture public and political attention.
