New Initiative Targets Eviction Crisis in Phoenix

Faced with rising eviction rates, Maricopa County is rolling out an innovative pilot program in Phoenix aimed at reducing housing instability. With a budget allocation of $800,000, the program intends to identify households vulnerable to eviction and offer them necessary resources. It also seeks to cultivate collaboration among landlords and justice courts.

As Kate Brophy McGee, the chair of the county Board of Supervisors, explains, the initiative is designed as a proactive measure for tenants on the brink of eviction. “We are going to address it in this small area, see if our solutions work and are successful. By definition, both the tenants and the landlords will incur lower costs and less disruption in their lives than an actual eviction process,” she stated.

Inspired by a successful statewide initiative in Texas, this program aims to avert homelessness by ensuring that families and individuals can remain in their homes. Brophy McGee emphasized the desire of these residents to maintain stable housing: “You have families that want to be housed, individuals who want to be in a home. And they are doing everything that they can to be in the home.”

Should the pilot prove effective, there are plans to broaden its reach to additional areas throughout the Valley, potentially offering a scalable solution to a pressing social issue.
