Massive Demolition Underway at Former Maricopa County Hospital Site
In Phoenix, a giant of the demolition world is at work, leveling the site of the former Maricopa County Hospital near 24th and Roosevelt streets. The 5130B UHD excavator, renowned for its size and power, is the star of this operation, weighing in at over 400 tons and boasting a reach of 150 feet.
As the excavator methodically dismantles the old structure, Michael Murphy, a spokesperson for Valleywise Health, explained to KJZZ that the cleared area might soon serve as additional parking. This endeavor is part of a larger transformation, following the hospital’s relocation to the newly established Valleywise Health Medical Center, which opened in 2024 just west of the current demolition site.
Murphy noted that the demolition project commenced in June and is expected to wrap up by January 2026. “Several other old buildings also were demolished before they began work on the hospital, including an old power plant, administration building and a physician’s office building,” he added.
