Mexican Diplomatic Efforts Lead to Reduced Remittance Tax in the U.S.
The Mexican government has successfully influenced changes in a U.S. legislative proposal, marking a significant diplomatic win for immigrants. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the U.S. Congress has lowered the proposed tax on remittances, which are funds sent by immigrants to their home countries.
Initially, President Donald Trump’s extensive spending and tax cut proposal included a 5% tax on remittances sent by non-citizens. However, after discussions with Mexican diplomats, American lawmakers have decreased the tax rate to 3.5%.
In addition to addressing remittances, trade discussions between Mexico and the U.S. are ongoing. Sheinbaum and Trump have also engaged in talks regarding U.S. tariffs on essential goods such as steel, aluminum, and automobiles.
“We continue negotiating, with a good relationship and good communication,” Sheinbaum stated, emphasizing the positive dialogue between the two nations.
