U.S. Expands Drone Surveillance in Mexico Amid Trade Tensions

In recent developments, the CIA’s drone operations over Mexico have reportedly increased, sparking discussions between the two nations. This initiative, aimed at monitoring cartel activities, was initiated under President Joe Biden and has seen further expansion since Donald Trump assumed the presidency last month, according to The New York Times.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed these reports during her daily press briefing, emphasizing the legality and cooperative nature of the U.S. drone flights. She stated, “What this is is a collaboration and a cooperation.”

Highlighting the long-standing partnership between the United States and Mexico, Sheinbaum described the drone flights as a joint operation that has been in place for several years.

The timing of the program’s expansion coincides with escalating tensions, as President Trump’s administration contemplates imposing a 25% tariff on Mexican goods, potentially effective early next month.
