NAU Ends Partnership with Chinese University Amid Security Concerns

In a significant move to address national security concerns, Northern Arizona University (NAU) has decided to terminate its collaboration with a Chinese institution. The decision follows a congressional report highlighting potential threats posed by such partnerships.

Since 2014, NAU has been involved in a joint electrical engineering program with Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications (CQUPT). This initiative enabled Chinese students to pursue their studies remotely at NAU for three years, culminating with a year on the Flagstaff campus.

However, scrutiny from the U.S. House Committee on the Chinese Communist Party raised alarms. The committee reported that over 50 similar collaborations in American universities might inadvertently contribute to China’s military and technological advancements.

Republican Congressman Eli Crane expressed approval of NAU’s decision, which will see the program phased out within three months. “NAU’s actions reflect a responsible approach to protecting students, faculty, and the integrity of U.S. research and education,” Crane stated. “We greatly appreciate their commitment to these shared values, as well as all they do for Northern Arizona.”

Kim Ott, an NAU spokesperson, emphasized that the termination would not affect the university’s current Chinese students or scholars. “Following a careful assessment, the university has decided to sunset the ‘3+1 program’ with CQUPT. A structured wind-down is underway to support current students and faculty while aligning with institutional priorities and bipartisan national security considerations,” Ott noted.

This decision underscores NAU’s commitment to regularly reviewing international collaborations, ensuring compliance with federal guidelines and prioritizing the welfare of its academic community.
