Navajo Nation President Leaves During State Address Amid Scrutiny
During a state of the nation address in Window Rock, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren unexpectedly exited the session while responding to lawmakers’ inquiries. The abrupt departure occurred as delegates were probing into the administration’s business relations with a manufactured home company.
Speaker Crystalyne Curley expressed disappointment, stating, “The council has a duty to ensure that any agreements involving outside entities, especially those affecting the livelihood of our people, are held to the highest standards of transparency.” She noted that Nygren’s walkout was “very disappointing and disrespectful,” adding to existing concerns.
This incident marks the second occasion where President Nygren has left during a session, and he has entirely missed the address four times. Recent months have seen escalating tensions between Nygren and the council, which has initiated an investigation into the administration’s dealings with ZenniHome, tasked with constructing homes on Navajo land.
The council has sought the intervention of the tribe’s judicial branch to examine potential illegal or unethical practices concerning a contract with Indigenous Design Studio + Architects and its subcontract with ZenniHome. Additionally, a forensic audit has been requested from the tribe’s auditor general.
The situation has further intensified following ZenniHome’s recent closure of its plant at the former Navajo Generating Station site near Page, resulting in the layoff of approximately 200 employees. President Nygren’s office has yet to provide a comment on the matter.
