Challenges Mount as Dragon Bravo Fire Expands
The Dragon Bravo Fire on the North Rim is proving to be a formidable challenge, with containment efforts dropping to a mere 9%. The fire has aggressively advanced towards the northeast, complicating firefighting efforts.
Estimating the fire’s spread has been hindered by unfavorable weather, but current assessments suggest it has now consumed over 71,000 acres. Firefighters are contending with exceptionally low humidity levels and unpredictable fire behavior, which intensifies the difficulty of controlling the blaze as it tears through mixed conifer and aspen forests.
Efforts are underway to identify and reinforce both natural and artificial barriers that could serve as containment lines. Despite these efforts, the erratic nature of the fire continues to pose significant obstacles.
Fire crews are diligently working to safeguard the Kaibab Lodge and maintain the integrity of Highway 67, which runs between Jacob Lake and the entrance to Grand Canyon National Park’s North Rim. Additionally, preparations are being made to protect structures in the House Rock Valley area.
