Charitable Organizations Brace for Impact as Government Shutdown Persists
A continuing government shutdown is leaving some federal employees without their expected paychecks this week. Anticipating the financial strain this may impose on affected workers, a charitable organization in Phoenix is gearing up to assist those in need.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, which came to the aid of 57 families during the 2019 government shutdown, is preparing for a potential surge in requests for help. While demand has not yet reached critical levels, Jessica Berg, the Chief Program Officer, predicts an increase in need as the month draws to a close and rent payments become due.
“The thing about the shutdown last time, and what we’re anticipating again, is there are folks who have really never been in this situation before to have to ask for help,” Berg commented.
On average, the organization disburses approximately $1,300 per family to assist with rent or utility bills. This aid can be pivotal in preventing homelessness, which can be significantly more costly for communities, potentially reaching tens of thousands of dollars annually for supportive services.
In response to the anticipated demand, St. Vincent de Paul has initiated a food drive and fundraiser this month to bolster their resources.
“There are so many ways that folks can get involved through donations or food drives or volunteering their time,” Berg noted, emphasizing the critical role of community support during such times.
