As the festive season winds down, many are left wondering what to do with their Christmas trees. In Phoenix, an eco-friendly solution is in place, giving trees a new lease on life.
On a brisk Monday morning at Cesar Chavez Park in south Phoenix, a collection of live Christmas trees is already assembled, awaiting transfer to the city’s composting site.
“Every year, the city of Phoenix opens drop-off locations at select parks. This year, there are 13 parks and two Sunbelt Rental locations where residents can dispose of their natural Christmas trees,” explained Verdiana Cervantes, a zero waste analyst with the city.
The initiative, which runs through January 9, also accepts wreaths and poinsettias. However, certain conditions must be met.
“No fake trees are allowed. All items must be natural, free from decorations, frost, wires, and any other materials,” Cervantes advised.
Celebrate New Year’s by Cleaning Up
If you’re gearing up for New Year’s celebrations, Phoenix city officials have some straightforward guidelines to ensure a responsible clean-up.
Recyclable items, such as food-grade glass from wine and champagne bottles, can be placed in the recycling bin. However, fireworks require special attention.
“Many people dispose of fireworks directly into the trash, but it’s crucial to ensure they are completely extinguished. Soak them before disposal to prevent any potential fires,” Cervantes cautioned.
Phoenix Tips to Reduce Holiday Waste
- Reuse gift bags and wrapping paper.
- Transform paper shopping bags into gift bags or wrapping paper; colorful magazine pages or newspaper comics can also be used.
- Consider decorative reusable shopping bags as an alternative to gift bags for a year-round use and cost-effective option.
- Donate used holiday decorations and lights instead of discarding them.
