A citizen petition calls for changes to the Phoenix ethics commission

A public petition urging reforms to the Phoenix ethics commission is up for review this Wednesday. The petition aims to overhaul the existing complaint system, which critics argue is both unfair and difficult to access.

City officials suggest that the Phoenix City Council direct the petition to the ethics commission during its upcoming meeting next month. Central to the petition’s claims is the assertion that the current setup requires complaints to be notarized, a hurdle that reportedly resulted in 21 unresolved complaints at the commission’s previous meeting.

Since the commission’s inception in 2024, these 21 complaints represent the entirety of cases submitted, according to city authorities. The petition advocates for removing the prerequisite that complaints must be submitted in person during official business hours.

Additionally, it calls for eliminating the provision that imposes a penalty on those lodging frivolous complaints.
