FAA Guidance Accelerates New Terminal Plans for Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport
Exciting developments are on the horizon for Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport as plans for a new terminal are set to advance more quickly than initially anticipated. Recent updates in FAA guidance have expedited the projected timeline for this significant infrastructure project.
Originally, the new terminal was expected to open its doors in 2036. However, thanks to the updated guidance, this timeline has been brought forward to 2033, much to the anticipation of airport officials and travelers alike.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has deemed the 2006 environmental impact statement adequate to proceed with the terminal’s development. This decision has paved the way for faster progress on this critical project.
Assistant Aviation Director Daver Malik emphasized the necessity of expanding the airport’s capacity to meet growing demands. “So the airlines continue to expand there. They’re continuing to grow. And with our future projections, we are pretty much running out of room to support that growth here for our airlines and also for our community,” he stated.
Malik also highlighted the FAA’s role in evaluating airport projects, explaining, “This is where the FAA looks at sort of comprehensively at the scope of what the airport is planning to do and how it impacts existing facilities, the surrounding areas in the community, and makes a determination if that project or that development can proceed.”
One of the major hurdles in developing the new terminal will be ensuring that the construction and expansion efforts minimize disruption to current airport operations, a challenge that Malik and the team are prepared to tackle.
