After a long-standing presence of almost 75 years, the downtown YMCA in Phoenix has announced its closure. However, a new chapter is on the horizon as plans for redevelopment are in motion, involving significant partnerships.
The Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury, and the Valley of the Sun YMCA have teamed up to create a state-of-the-art $60 million facility. This ambitious project will include a three-story, 55,000-square-foot building, which is scheduled to open in 2029. Among its features are three basketball courts, one of which will be NBA-sized, as well as health and wellness programs, and initiatives for education and workforce development.
In addition to the sports and community facilities, the new development will incorporate 60 affordable housing units situated above the YMCA complex.
“This partnership marks an exciting new chapter for the YMCA and our commitment to downtown Phoenix,” Bryan Madden, president and CEO of Valley of the Sun YMCA, expressed in a recent press release.
Earlier in September, it was revealed that the decision to close the existing YMCA was driven by the building’s aging condition, which necessitated extensive repairs and infrastructure upgrades.
