Pima County Reinstates COVID-19 Vaccination Services Amid Statewide Efforts

In a renewed effort to expand vaccine accessibility, Pima County health officials have resumed offering COVID-19 vaccinations at local clinics. This development aligns with Governor Katie Hobbs’ recent executive order aimed at increasing vaccine distribution across Arizona.

Under the direction of Pima County Health Director Theresa Cullen, the county clinics will provide vaccines following the clinical guidelines set by national health authorities. The standing order ensures that patients, whether assessed in person or through telehealth services, will have access to the vaccines if they seek them.

Crystal Rambaud, assistant director in charge of clinical services at the Pima County Health Department, commented on the complexities encountered this year due to evolving federal guidance. “We certainly knew we would be purchasing some privately purchased doses, that’s what we do every year, but I think there was more of a question about what our federal supplies would look like, and a lot of the questions were about what demand was going to look like,” Rambaud explained. She also expressed concerns that changes in guidelines might affect insurance coverage, potentially deterring individuals from getting vaccinated.

Following a significant restriction by the FDA, several states, including Arizona, have generated their own vaccine guidelines. The updated federal recommendations suggest COVID-19 vaccines primarily for elderly individuals and those with pre-existing health conditions. According to Rambaud, the initial limited batch of vaccines is expected to arrive this month, with a full supply anticipated by early October. These vaccines will be provided at no cost.

Rambaud noted that the demand for COVID-19 vaccinations tends to surge in the fall, coinciding with flu vaccine season. Although the current supply is limited, she reassured that once the full shipment is received, there will be ample doses available for those interested.
