Lightning Strike on Arizona’s Highest Peak Triggers Search and Rescue Operation
Rescue teams are in pursuit of a man reportedly struck by lightning on Humphreys Peak, Arizona’s tallest mountain, near Flagstaff.
As of Wednesday afternoon, one of the victims managed to descend the mountain to meet search and rescue personnel. The second individual, although conscious, was unable to make his way down from the summit. Coconino County Sheriff’s Department officials indicated that both men suffered injuries while on the Humphreys Peak Trail.
“It is completely socked in right now,” mentioned department spokesperson Jon Paxton, describing the summit’s weather conditions. “The top of it. If you go down into Flagstaff, it’s just partly cloudy.”
Paxton also noted that due to adverse weather conditions, the agency’s helicopters were grounded, hampering aerial assistance in the search efforts. Humphreys Peak stands as Arizona’s tallest peak.
