Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema’s Departure Marks End of an Era
In a poignant address on the Senate floor, Arizona’s Kyrsten Sinema bid farewell as her term comes to an end. The independent senator reflected on her single term, emphasizing the significance of the Senate’s legislative filibuster, which mandates 60 votes for a measure to pass.
Sinema stated, “It is us—our actions, our words, our incivility and ultimately, our unwillingness to compromise—that prevent reasonable solutions from advancing,” during her 15-minute speech.
With the Republican Party poised to take control of all three branches of government next year, Sinema’s exit is timely. Initially a Democrat and Green Party member, she declared her independence in 2022 and played a pivotal role in the Senate, notably in passing the Inflation Reduction Act.
While her independent stance often left progressive Democrats exasperated, Sinema has faced scrutiny for her absence in over a third of roll call votes since April, as reported by GovTrack.
Recently, Democratic Representative Ruben Gallego emerged victorious in the election, succeeding Sinema by defeating Republican Kari Lake for the Senate seat.
