Partial Reopening of State Route 89A Following Flood Damage

In the aftermath of recent flooding, State Route 89A, a crucial link between Sedona and Flagstaff, has been partially reopened. The floods severely damaged the road and exposed the guardrail supports, necessitating immediate attention.

Currently, motorists can travel between Sedona and Slide Rock State Park. However, the section leading to Oak Creek Scenic Vista north of the park remains inaccessible, with no timeline for when it might be reopened.

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has advised that the closure could be extended for a significant period. During this time, travelers are directed to use State Route 179 and the I-17 for journeys between Flagstaff and Sedona.

While southbound travel from Flagstaff to Oak Creek Scenic Vista is permitted, descending into the canyon is still prohibited as repair work continues on the roadway.

The location of SR89A adjacent to Oak Creek, which overflowed its banks and suffered from multiple sewage leaks amid the intense rains in late October, complicates the repair efforts. ADOT noted that the work is challenging, given the forested cliffs and significant soil erosion beneath the road in Oak Creek Canyon.
