In an unsettling discovery at Lake Powell, located near the Arizona-Utah border, receding waters have unveiled a submerged pickup truck, containing human remains. The truck is linked to a man, aged 54, reported missing since December 2023, although official identification of the remains is still pending. The authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
The vehicle was spotted just below the waterline during the Labor Day weekend at Lone Rock Beach, situated within Utah’s Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. On Wednesday, authorities managed to extract the truck from the lake. According to Lt. Alan Alldredge from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, the water level of Lake Powell has dropped approximately 20 feet (6 meters) since the individual was last seen.
Lt. Alldredge remarked on the situation, noting, “We have had several bad years,” in reference to the declining water levels in the lake.
The missing person was last observed at a store in Kanab, Utah, on December 1, 2023. This is not an isolated incident, as human remains have previously been uncovered at other lakes within the Colorado River system, which are also suffering from prolonged drought conditions.
In 2022, multiple sets of human remains were discovered at Lake Mead, a body of water straddling the Arizona-Nevada border, located over 300 miles (approximately 482.8 kilometers) from Lake Powell. One of the more notable finds at Lake Mead included the remains of a man with a gunshot wound, discovered in a dilapidated barrel at a harbor. To date, the identity of those remains remains unknown.
