Tragedy Strikes Christmas Parade in Kayenta, Navajo Nation

A festive occasion turned tragic on Monday when a vehicle, suspected to be driven under the influence, plowed into a crowd awaiting a Christmas parade in Kayenta on the Navajo Nation. The incident resulted in the death of one person and left several others injured.

According to reports from the Navajo Nation police, the driver breached the parade route shortly after 5 p.m., colliding with onlookers who were gathering for the event, scheduled to commence at 5:30 p.m.

In a recent update, the Navajo Police Department confirmed that four individuals were injured, and tragically, one person succumbed to their injuries.

Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren highlighted the severity of the incident, noting that among the victims was a young child in critical condition and a pregnant woman who were both struck by the vehicle.

The driver involved in the crash has been apprehended and is currently detained. The suspect’s identity and any potential charges remain undisclosed as the investigation continues.

In a heartfelt social media post, President Nygren referred to the incident as a “tragic event,” emphasizing that the parade was intended to foster joy and unity within the community. “This event was meant to bring joy, unity, and holiday spirit to our community — and is a time for families to come together and celebrate,” he expressed. “No one should have to experience tragedy during a season meant for love and togetherness.”

He also called upon members of the Navajo Nation to actively prevent incidents of drinking and driving.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
