Tempe’s New Initiative to Enhance Animal Welfare Policies

In an effort to bolster community engagement and improve animal welfare, the city of Tempe is rolling out a fresh initiative. A newly formed subcommittee is set to review and enhance existing guidelines, especially following recent state legislation aimed at safeguarding pets.

The Animal Welfare and Cruelty Council subcommittee is spearheading this effort to align with the new law. Tempe Councilmember Berdetta Hodge, who is both an advocate and pet owner, highlighted the community’s keen interest in this topic.

“We will also look at ways to make sure we get the most information — robust information — out to our community about our animals and animal welfare,” said Hodge, emphasizing the importance of disseminating comprehensive information.

Animal welfare concerns resonate deeply within the community, as Hodge notes: “They care a lot about what happens to the animals, what is going on. I got a lot of feedback on, you know, like on service animals and emotional support animals, where they can go, what they can do.”

The subcommittee convened its inaugural virtual meeting last week, setting the stage for increased community involvement. Additionally, plans are underway to forge stronger partnerships with other animal welfare organizations, amplifying their collective impact.
