Family Planning Services in Arizona Continue Amid Federal Disruptions

The ongoing federal government shutdown has led to significant changes in the administration of the Title X program, a crucial initiative for family planning among low-income individuals. Recent reports from the New York Times reveal that the Trump administration has dismissed many staff members who were responsible for managing this program.

In Arizona, Title X funding provides essential reproductive health services to over 30,000 residents who lack health insurance or cannot afford care. These services include contraception, STI screening, pregnancy testing, and breast exams, among others.

The administration of these funds within the state is handled by the organization Affirm, which allocates approximately $6.1 million annually. Despite the layoffs in Washington, Affirm’s CEO, Bré Thomas, assures that the organization has secured sufficient funds to maintain operations until the end of March.

“I think we are good until April 1, and then we’ll have to see what happens after April 1 with regard to the program and the funding,” Thomas stated. Up to this point, there have been no interruptions in Title X services in Arizona due to the shutdown or the staff reductions.

Established in 1970, the Title X program is operated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The future funding of the program rests in the hands of Congress, which will determine its budget once the government resumes normal operations.

“Our hope is that Congress will continue to fund the program and then HHS will have to figure out how and where to monitor and run the program out of,” said Thomas, expressing optimism about the program’s continuity.
