Federal Grants and Loan Freeze Overturned After Legal Challenge
In a recent development, the Trump administration has reversed its decision to suspend federal grants and loans following a federal court intervention. The reversal comes after a lawsuit led by Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes and other state attorneys general challenged the legality of the funding freeze.
Attorney General Mayes highlighted the significant impact of the proposed freeze, stating that it would have stripped over $200 million from the state’s Department of Economic Security, affecting vital programs such as affordable housing and SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). Additionally, the freeze threatened the salaries of more than 700 drug enforcement officers and risked the closure of numerous rural healthcare facilities.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Mayes criticized the order, emphasizing its constitutional issues. “These are funds that were authorized by congress and that Donald Trump just decided to shut off on his own, that is not the way it works in our country, so it is blatantly, flatly unconstitutional,” she asserted.
The Trump administration’s memo indicated that the freeze was intended to ensure federal spending did not support “wokeness.” However, the decision to halt the funding was reversed after a federal judge intervened and blocked the order on Tuesday.
