Wildfire Prompts Evacuations in Grand Canyon’s North Rim Area

A rapidly spreading wildfire has necessitated the evacuation of the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, along with nearby Jacob Lake and surrounding forested regions. This urgent action was taken Thursday evening due to the encroaching White Sage Fire.

The fire, ignited by a lightning strike, was initial reported on Wednesday. It is located approximately 15 miles south of Fredonia and has quickly expanded to cover 1,000 acres, remaining entirely uncontained as of the latest updates.

An alert from Grand Canyon National Park advises, “Evacuees should travel calmly at a normal rate of speed and stay on paved roads only. North Rim day use is closed until further notice.”

Efforts to combat the blaze are underway, with several crews from the Bureau of Land Management, supported by aircraft, deployed to contain the fire.

Park officials have clarified that the White Sage Fire is distinct from the Dragon Bravo Fire, another lightning-induced fire within the park which is being managed to promote forest health.
