Tragic Fall at Mogollon Rim Claims Life of Camper

In a tragic incident over the Labor Day Weekend, a 29-year-old woman lost her life after a fall from a cliff on the Mogollon Rim. The accident occurred while she was on a camping trip with friends near Forest Lakes, east of Payson.

According to reports from the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, the woman left her campsite around midnight to use the restroom. The area was completely dark, and she inadvertently walked off the edge, plummeting approximately 120 feet.

The search and rescue efforts were initiated shortly after the incident was reported, just past midnight. Deputies arrived at the scene within 30 minutes, and a five-member team from the Search and Rescue Team reached the location by 5 a.m. The woman’s body was recovered and handed over to the medical examiner around two hours later.

Her identity has not been disclosed. Meanwhile, sheriff’s officials are looking into the possibility that alcohol may have played a role in the mishap.
