Adam Hollier’s Shift Alters Michigan’s Political Landscape
In a surprising political shift, Adam Hollier has opted to leave the race for Michigan’s 13th congressional district, aiming instead for the Democratic nomination for Secretary of State in the 2026 elections.
Hollier emphasized the urgency of defending fundamental rights, stating, “Our fundamental rights are under attack like never before. Donald Trump and his MAGA allies have put everything from free and fair elections to the right to vote on the chopping block.”
As a former state senator, Hollier’s previous attempts to secure the Detroit congressional seat in 2022 and 2024 were thwarted by Shri Thanedar, the current seat holder and Democratic nominee. Thanedar, known for his business background, has frequently found himself at odds with fellow Democrats.
With Hollier stepping down, the Democratic contenders for the congressional seat are now Shri Thanedar, State Representative Donavan McKinney, UAW member Shelby Campbell, and Nazmul Hassan.
Following Hollier’s exit, McKinney declared himself the “front runner,” expressing his commitment to representing community struggles effectively. “I’m running because our community deserves to be able to sleep at night knowing they have a representative in Congress who truly knows their struggles and fights for them every single day,” McKinney stated.
As of now, Thanedar has remained silent regarding Hollier’s decision to exit the race.
Simultaneously, the Democratic field for the Secretary of State position is expanding, with candidates such as Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum and Deputy Secretary of State Aghogho Edevbie joining the race alongside Hollier.
The Democratic nominee for Secretary of State will be selected at the state party convention next year, presenting a pivotal decision for Michigan Democrats.
