Akbar K. Waljee, a recognized leader in global health equity, has been named director of the Center for Global Health Equity at the University of Michigan. Known for using artificial intelligence and machine learning, Waljee transforms complex data into actionable insights to enhance health outcomes. As the Lyle C. Roll Professor and assistant dean for global health research, he will step into the role on April 1. His expertise extends across the Medical School and the School of Public Health.

Waljee will follow Joseph C. Kolars, who was instrumental in establishing the center’s success since its creation in 2019 and official launch in 2021. Kolars will now focus on global initiatives and continue supporting the Center for Global Health Equity and Michigan Medicine’s Global REACH.

Waljee aims to continue the center’s mission of enabling communities to “live longer and better” by leveraging data, research, and strategic partnerships. Originally from Nairobi, Kenya, he has focused his career on improving healthcare quality and access, especially in resource-limited settings.

He is acclaimed for applying advanced methods, like AI, to improve decision-making and ensure equitable care locally and globally. His research has been backed by grants from entities such as the Veterans Affairs Health Systems Research and the National Institutes of Health.

Beyond his roles in the medical school, Waljee has led initiatives like the Michigan Integrated Center for Health Analytics and the IHPI Data and Methods Hub. His leadership in these fields shows his ability to address complex healthcare challenges effectively.

Waljee earned his biology degree and medical degree from Emory University and completed his residency and fellowship at U-M, joining the faculty in 2009. In his new role, he will continue collaborating with Kolars and Global REACH to enhance research initiatives in global health.
