Detroit’s Leadership Transition: Sheffield Endorsed by Duggan

In a significant move for Detroit’s political landscape, Mayor Mike Duggan has thrown his support behind City Council President Mary Sheffield to succeed him as the city’s next mayor. This endorsement marks a pivotal moment as Sheffield aims to transition from council leadership to the mayor’s office.

Mayor Duggan highlighted Sheffield’s ability to both collaborate and challenge his administration, citing her leadership qualities. Sheffield’s recent primary win, where she secured an outright majority in a competitive field, was notable for being the first such instance since 1947 where a council member was chosen as a mayoral candidate by voters.

Reflecting on the primary results, Duggan remarked, “When I saw the results come in election night with a landslide victory, to say, for the first time in 75 years, people see City Council and their leadership as an asset. I was just so proud.”

Sheffield emphasized the productive working relationship she maintained with Duggan, despite occasional policy disagreements. Together, they initiated projects like the establishment of a trust fund for affordable housing and ensuring the right to legal representation for Detroit residents facing eviction.

“Mayor Duggan and I never fell into the trap of leading with rhetoric,” Sheffield stated. “Instead, we rolled up our sleeves and we found real solutions to the issues that matter most to our residents.”

As Sheffield prepares for the November general election, she will be contending with Detroit pastor Solomon Kinloch, who emphasized in a statement that the decision rests with Detroit voters, not Duggan.

Concluding his tenure as mayor, Duggan is setting his sights on the governor’s office, planning to run as an independent candidate in Michigan.
