Governor Whitmer Prepares for Key State Address Amid Political Changes

In a move that highlights Michigan’s shifting political landscape, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced the upcoming date for her penultimate State of the State address. Scheduled for February 26, the speech will be delivered to the public and a joint session of the Legislature.

According to a statement released by Whitmer’s office, the address will concentrate on crucial issues such as jobs, reducing costs, and further investments in education. Whitmer remarked, “Michigan is a state on the move as we continue working together to create good-paying jobs, fix our roads, and invest in our students and schools. I look forward to delivering my 2025 State of the State Address where I will lay out my plan to build on our years of strong, bipartisan progress and strategic, fiscally responsible leadership.”

This address marks Whitmer’s first since the Republican Party gained control of the Michigan House following last year’s elections, while Democrats maintain their hold on the Senate. The speech will be delivered in the House chamber at the state Capitol, a customary venue for such an event.

House Speaker Matt Hall, a Republican, officially approved the use of the chamber. In his letter of approval, Hall expressed anticipation for Whitmer’s plan regarding road funding. He stated, “We delivered a detailed roads plan to you earlier today that would increase funding by more than $3 billion dollars and do it without raising taxes by one dime. Perhaps your address on February 26 will be the right time to share the details of your plan to solve our state’s long-time roads and infrastructure crisis.”

The Governor has indicated that the timing of her address is later than usual, showing respect for the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump in Washington D.C. and accommodating lawmakers wishing to attend the event.
