Incumbents took the lead in many Detroit City Council races

Tuesday’s primary election in Detroit showcased a strong performance from incumbent city council members, with many securing a lead in their respective races.

Among the at-large candidates, Mary Waters and Coleman A. Young II emerged as frontrunners, garnering 32.96% and 32.2% of the votes, respectively. Janee’ L. Ayers and James Harris, who received 13.81% and 7.34% of the votes, will also progress to the general election.

With all precincts reporting, a total of 145,724 voters participated in the at-large race. The primary voting results determine that the top two candidates from each district will compete in the upcoming fall election.

In District 2, current council member Angela Whitfield Calloway secured over 44.56% of the vote, while her opponent, Roy McCalister Jr., who previously held the seat, achieved 29.91%. These contenders are set for a rematch in November.

District 7 witnessed a close contest where Denzel Anton McCampbell of Progress Michigan narrowly led with 34.5% of votes against State Rep. Karen Whitsett, who garnered 33.93%.

In District 5, police commissioner Willie E. Burton will move forward to the general election with 19.42% of the votes, following Renata Miller from the Detroit Historic Districts Alliance, who received 23.17%.

For the remaining districts, incumbents face little competition, with either no opposition or just two candidates, ensuring their advancement to the general election.
