GOP Rep. John James announces candidacy for Michigan governor in 2026

The political landscape in Michigan is heating up as Republican Rep. John James declared his candidacy for governor in the 2026 election. His entry into the race not only makes him the most prominent Republican contender but also leaves a significant opening in the state’s congressional delegation.

Currently serving his second term, James represents a district north of Detroit and aims to succeed Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who is restricted by term limits. His decision to run comes early in his congressional term, pointing to a strategic calculation in state politics.

James, who narrowly won his House seat in 2022, has previously contested for the U.S. Senate twice without success. However, his reelection in 2024 was more decisive, defeating Democrat Carl Marlinga by a margin of nearly six percentage points.

In the gubernatorial race, James will face competition within his party, including from the state’s Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt. On the Democratic front, notable candidates such as Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II have already announced their bids, with Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan running as an independent.

The announcement was made by James on social media, where he emphasized: “It’s time to get Michigan’s government out of fantasyland and back to common sense.” James expressed his continued alliance with former President Trump, stating, “President Trump and I have been in each other’s corner through thick and thin for eight years — no reason that will end now. He’s doing his part to Make America Great Again, and I’ll do mine to bring prosperity and sanity back to Michigan.”

As a military veteran and the first Black Republican elected to Congress from Michigan, James is often seen as a rising figure within the GOP, despite his prior statewide electoral defeats. His bid for governor now sets the stage for an open contest in Michigan’s 10th Congressional District, encompassing parts of the northern suburbs of Detroit in Oakland and Macomb counties.

With Republicans holding a slim majority in the House and facing a midterm election cycle, the district becomes a critical battleground. Democrats have shown strong interest in reclaiming the seat, with former prosecutor Christina Hines and Army veteran Alex Hawkins already launching campaigns to challenge for it.
