Justin Pearson Challenges Longtime Rep. Steve Cohen in Tennessee Race

Justin Pearson, a Tennessee state house member, challenges 10-term incumbent Rep. Steve Cohen for the 9th district seat.
Young candidates rival older incumbents in midterm fundraising

In an unexpected political twist, Justin Pearson, a former intern for Congressman Steve Cohen, is challenging his past mentor for a seat in Tennessee’s 9th congressional district. Pearson, now a state representative who once worked under Cohen’s tutelage, is outpacing the long-standing Democrat in fundraising, amassing over twice as much as Cohen.

Pearson, aged 31, believes it’s time for fresh energy in Memphis, saying, “We need someone who has new ideas, new energy and a new perspective to be an advocate for our community.” His campaign is focused not on opposing Cohen personally but on challenging the “status quo” that he perceives as stagnating the district.

As the trend of younger candidates stepping up to challenge senior politicians gains momentum, Pearson is part of a broader movement within the Democratic Party. An Oath platform report highlights over 80 Gen Z and millennial candidates taking on Democratic incumbents aged 65 and above, a significant increase from the previous election cycle’s 24.

Despite the rarity of younger challengers successfully unseating incumbents in politics, shifts are appearing. According to NPR’s analysis, in 12 Democratic strongholds, young candidates are not only gaining attention but also securing substantial financial backing. In some cases, they have surpassed the incumbents’ fundraising efforts, relying heavily on individual contributions.

These financial achievements hint at a possible readiness among Democratic primary voters for generational change. Brian Derrick, CEO of Oath, remarked, “The message is clearly that part of the gig is knowing when to leave,” reflecting a sentiment that the challenges faced today require new expertise.

Oath, which helps Democratic donors align their contributions with their values, has seen increased interest in supporting new congressional voices. The platform has directed over $10 million to competitive primaries, emphasizing the emergence of strong challengers like Pearson.

While Cohen’s campaign remains silent, Pearson’s fundraising prowess is noteworthy. By the end of 2025, he had raised $732,000, surpassing the cumulative efforts of Cohen’s challengers over the past 16 years. Cohen, though, holds a financial advantage with over $1.8 million in his campaign war chest, bolstered by corporate PAC donations.

Pearson isn’t alone in this generational challenge. Similar sentiments are echoed by Melat Kiros in Colorado, who is contesting against Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette. Kiros criticizes DeGette’s financial ties to industries that she believes adversely affect constituents’ lives.

DeGette’s campaign rebuts these claims, asserting her progressive stance on key issues. Nonetheless, Kiros has nearly matched DeGette’s individual contributions, highlighting a competitive race.

Generational and Financial Dynamics Shape Democratic Primaries

As the Democratic Party traditionally refrains from primary interventions, the focus remains on flipping Republican-held seats. But after losing support from key demographics in 2024, some argue that primary engagement might showcase the party’s adaptability.

David Hogg of Leaders We Deserve advocates for youthful Democrats, supporting candidates like Pearson to represent genuine generational change within the party.

Money Isn’t Everything in Politics

However, financial success does not guarantee electoral victory. In North Carolina, despite being outraised, Rep. Valerie Foushee triumphed over Nida Allam, a younger challenger. This race, marked by significant outside spending, illustrates the complex dynamics of political campaigns.

Though Allam’s campaign fell short, her efforts represent a growing movement among young progressives who aim to challenge established norms and push for grassroots-driven change.
