Macomb County Implements Innovative Election Transparency Tool
In a pioneering move for election integrity, Macomb County has introduced a groundbreaking system to ensure the accuracy of vote counting. This initiative positions the county as a leader within the state, utilizing a software known as Ballot Verifier to enhance transparency in elections.
Ballot Verifier operates by capturing digital images of each ballot as they are processed by the voting tabulator. It effectively removes any kind of voter-identifying information and randomizes the ballot images, safeguarding voter privacy throughout the process. This system permits election officials to verify if the tabulator’s results match the actual votes on the ballots. Moreover, the tool is accessible to the public through a dedicated webpage on the county clerk’s website.
Macomb County Clerk Anthony Forlini explained, “Although you don’t know if it’s your ballot specifically, you can just see whether that tabulator indeed scored all the ballots properly.” This initiative is seen as a response to rising concerns and debates surrounding election security and the integrity of the electoral process.
Forlini emphasized the importance of this measure in fostering public trust, stating, “I think it’s just one more step in adding transparency, taking away the mystery of elections, and having people feel comfortable with their elections.” As a Republican candidate in the race for Michigan Secretary of State, Forlini advocates for broader adoption of this practice, suggesting it could soon become the benchmark for election management across Michigan. “I really believe most clerks in the state want to see that transparency, [and] to answer the questions that everyone has,” he noted.
