Mallory Martin-Ferguson has been appointed as the University of Michigan’s new student ombuds for the Ann Arbor campus under the Division of Student Life. She will assume her role before the fall semester, succeeding Tom Lehker, who retired in July after serving since 2010.
The University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus offers one full-time student ombuds for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The Office of the Student Ombuds provides a confidential and neutral resource for student questions, complaints, and concerns within the university environment.
Operating independently, the office complements existing administrative processes without formal decision-making authority. It does not advocate for either party in disputes but ensures fair and consistent treatment for all students.
“I am honored to serve as the student ombuds and support students as they navigate their Michigan experience,” said Martin-Ferguson. “My hope is to provide a space where students feel heard, respected, and empowered to find solutions to their concerns.”
Vice President for Student Life Martino Harmon commended Martin-Ferguson’s experience and empathy, welcoming her to the Office of the Student Ombuds. “Mallory brings a wealth of experience in conflict and dispute resolution, policy oversight and administration, community development, and student support,” Harmon stated. “I am thrilled to welcome Mallory back to Student Life as our new Student Ombuds.”
With over 12 years at U-M, Martin-Ferguson has held roles in the Rackham Graduate School and Student Life. She currently directs Graduate Student and Program Consultation Services in Rackham and previously served as a conflict resolution specialist in the Rackham Dean’s Office. Prior roles in Student Life include assistant and associate director of Housing Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution.
