Microplastics Awareness Week: A Call to Action in Michigan

Michigan is taking significant steps to address a pressing environmental concern: microplastics. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has officially designated the week of October 19-26 as Microplastics Awareness Week, aiming to educate the public and promote proactive measures against plastic pollution.

During this dedicated week, residents are encouraged to engage in various activities designed to increase awareness and provide solutions for reducing plastic waste. These include educational events, community cleanups, and practical workshops aimed at minimizing household plastic use.

Microplastics, which are tiny plastic fragments less than 5mm in size, have been identified by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) as pervasive pollutants affecting ecosystems worldwide. While often originating from products like glitter, they also derive from the degradation of larger plastic items.

Phil Roos, EGLE Director, emphasized the statewide impact of microplastics: “Microplastics are a global issue that touches every part of Michigan, from our most remote inland lakes to our busiest cities. [Microplastics Awareness Week] is about empowering people with knowledge and actions that make a real difference in keeping our waters clean and healthy for generations to come.”

A key event during the week is a summit focused on understanding the pathways and environmental interactions of microplastics. The summit will also cover how EGLE detects these pollutants and the associated risks. Comprehensive research initiatives, including lake-by-lake testing for microplastic pollution, are part of the agenda.

Increased funding of $2 million from the state over five years supports EGLE’s enhanced research and monitoring efforts. This funding will facilitate the examination of microplastics in public drinking water and aid in formulating a statewide strategy encompassing policy development, monitoring, and public education.
