New Gun Safety Laws Aim to Enhance School and Home Security in Michigan

In a significant move to bolster gun safety, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has enacted a series of bills designed to aid parents in adhering to the state’s regulations on secure firearm storage. This legislative initiative, titled the “Safe Homes, Safe Schools” package, was championed by State Representatives Sharon MacDonell (D-Troy) and Julie Brixie (D-Okemos).

Under the new laws, Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services is tasked with developing educational materials about the state’s gun storage mandates. Schools are required to distribute these materials annually to parents, enhancing awareness and compliance.

The previously established storage laws, which were implemented last year, stipulate that firearms must be kept in locked containers or safes, unloaded, and fitted with gun locks in environments where children are present, including homes and vehicles.

The informational materials will also provide guidance on accessing free or affordable gun locks and safes, assisting parents in meeting legal requirements.

Beyond storage guidelines, the legislation also introduces a permanent School Safety and Mental Health Commission and mandates that public schools form behavior threat assessment and management teams to further safeguard students.

Ryan Bates, executive director of End Gun Violence Michigan, expressed optimism about the potential impact of these laws on reducing gun violence. “It’s been 20 years since Columbine, and things have only ever gotten worse on this issue of gun violence,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of legal compliance. “It’s not just a good idea. It’s not just a suggestion. It’s the law. You must safely store your firearms. And if someone is armed with a gun that you didn’t lock up, the gun owner then can be prosecuted for felonies.”

Alarmingly, firearms were identified as the leading cause of death for children and teens in Michigan in 2022, underscoring the urgency and necessity of these legislative measures.
