Calls for Congressional Action to Halt U.S. Military Measures in Iran
A coalition of political, faith, and community leaders in Detroit has raised their voices, urging Congress to assert its authority in limiting President Donald Trump’s military actions in Iran. During a gathering on Wednesday night, these leaders labeled the military campaign as an “illegitimate” act of war that requires immediate Congressional intervention.
The group emphasized the importance of invoking the War Powers Act, a legislative tool from the Vietnam War era designed to curb the president’s ability to engage in military actions without Congressional consent. The approval of this resolution would effectively bar any further military strikes on Iran without the express approval of Congress.
Andy Levin, a Democrat and former Congressman from Oakland County, highlighted the constitutional mandate that grants Congress the sole authority to declare war. He urged his fellow lawmakers to “grow a spine and stand together,” stating, “We have not declared war on Iran, and we must stop this president’s unauthorized, unlimited war with Iran that’s spreading a conflagration throughout the region.”
Abbas Alawieh, a co-founder of the Uncommitted movement and a Democratic candidate for the state Senate in suburban Detroit, delivered a direct plea. He stated, “What we’re asking for is Congress to do their jobs, rein in this president, rein in the secretary of war, and end the conflict and the suffering and the killing of American citizens right now.”
As the leaders called for action, the Senate conducted a vote on the War Powers Act resolution, ultimately rejecting it mainly along party lines. Michigan Senators Gary Peters and Elissa Slotkin supported the resolution, joining all but one of their Democratic colleagues. The House is anticipated to review a similar measure in the coming days.
President Trump has defended his military actions in Iran, citing his “responsibility to protect Americans” as the justification, though he has not identified any specific imminent threat. More on his stance can be found in a report by Fox News.
