Michigan Officials to Attend Mackinac Policy Conference with Free Access

In a decision that affects public officials across Michigan, the Secretary of State has confirmed that free tickets to the annual Mackinac Policy Conference do not violate state gift laws. This prestigious event, organized by the Detroit Regional Chamber, attracts significant figures in government and business every May for a series of discussions, networking opportunities, and social activities on Mackinac Island.

The ruling was based on arguments that the benefit gained by officials attending far exceeds the $3,200 ticket price. Without this clarity, such complimentary tickets could have been considered a banned gift under state law and previous interpretations by the state department.

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson found the chamber’s justification compelling. In her communication to Sandy K. Baruah, the chamber’s president, Benson noted, “Your public comment included additional evidence demonstrating that access to public officials in general is not only of high value to conference sponsors and other attendees but is a primary reason sponsors contribute and attendees participate in the conference.”

Brad Williams of the Detroit Regional Chamber emphasized the importance of having policymakers at the conference. According to Williams, discussions without the presence of those capable of implementing change would be ineffective. “If we were to try and have these conversations without the policymakers that can actually effect the change that is required, then we’re just talking to ourselves, and living in a bubble,” he stated.

Concerns had been raised about the cost for lawmakers, but their participation was never seriously doubted. Williams mentioned ongoing communication with Benson’s office regarding this matter. Additionally, the state Senate is considering bipartisan legislation that would permit lawmakers to continue enjoying free entrance to such events.

According to current chamber policy, statewide elected officials, including Benson, state legislators, and some local officials can receive complimentary access to the conference.
