Michigan Senator Under Investigation Following Video Urging Resistance to “Illegal Orders”
In a development that has garnered significant attention, Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin is under investigation by the Trump administration following her involvement in a controversial video. The video, featuring Slotkin alongside other Democrats, calls on military personnel to oppose “illegal orders.”
Senator Slotkin, who previously worked as a CIA analyst, revealed the investigation to The New York Times. This information was also independently confirmed by a source familiar with the situation, although they were not authorized to discuss it publicly. The inquiry is being conducted by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office, part of the Justice Department, which has yet to comment on the matter.
The investigation represents an escalation in the response from President Donald Trump and his team, who have described the video as “seditious”. Trump has publicly stated that such an act is “punishable by death.” The FBI has already begun contacting the involved lawmakers to arrange interviews, with Pirro’s involvement marking a significant step forward in the investigation.
The legal basis for the investigation remains unclear, as the video does not specify which laws might have been breached. The lawmakers involved, who all have military or national security backgrounds, emphasized adherence to established military protocols, specifically advising against following unlawful commands.
Moreover, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has taken action against another participant, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly. Hegseth is pursuing efforts to retroactively demote Kelly from his retired rank of captain. In response, Kelly has initiated a lawsuit against Hegseth, describing the move as unconstitutional retribution.
The video also includes appearances by Representatives Jason Crow of Colorado, Chris Deluzio of Pennsylvania, Maggie Goodlander of New Hampshire, and Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania. It remains uncertain whether these individuals are also under investigation by Pirro’s office or other parts of the Justice Department, aside from the FBI’s inquiries.
In the political arena, Slotkin has emerged as a notable figure for the Democrats, securing a Senate seat in the 2024 elections despite Michigan’s support for Trump in the presidential race. She also delivered the Democratic response to Trump’s congressional address in 2025.
