A new legislative proposal in Michigan is aiming to bolster the state’s trade relations with Ireland. This bipartisan effort seeks to establish a nine-member commission dedicated to fostering economic connections and encouraging investments between Michigan and Ireland.

State Senator Sean McCann (D-Kalamazoo) advocates for the bill, highlighting the potential benefits of partnering with both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. He emphasized, “This is basically a relationship we think we can benefit from. So, it makes sense to me, having Irish American heritage, to promote stronger ties between the countries and our economies. I don’t see a downside to it.”

Similar initiatives have been pursued by states like New Jersey and West Virginia, which have also sought to enhance their trade ties with Ireland. Under McCann’s proposal, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation would oversee the new commission.

A review of current state commissions reveals no similar initiatives for other countries, but Michigan has actively pursued international business, including engagements with Ireland. McCann believes that the commission could facilitate trade missions and attract Irish businesses to Michigan. “If Irish companies want to expand in the United States, they see that Michigan as a welcoming state for them to do that. And those relationships help pave those ways,” McCann explained.

This past spring, Governor Gretchen Whitmer embarked on a trade mission to Ireland and the U.K. with a focus on sectors like agriculture, aerospace, and defense. Additionally, Michigan signed a memorandum of understanding in February with the United Arab Emirates to create jobs.

While McCann’s legislation targets Irish trade relations specifically, another bill is advancing in the Michigan Senate to strengthen partnerships with Africa and the Caribbean. Proponents of this bill cite the regions’ rich resources and burgeoning markets as reasons for the collaboration. Both bills are expected to be voted on in the Michigan Senate soon.
