Michigan Residents Face Partial SNAP Benefits Amid Government Shutdown

As the federal government shutdown continues, Michiganders reliant on SNAP benefits will receive partial aid starting Saturday. However, some may not receive any assistance at all. The federal and state Department of Health and Human Services announced the change following a pause in the program due to funding issues.

The Trump administration halted the SNAP benefits on November 1, citing a lack of funding during the government shutdown. Despite this, two federal judges have mandated the use of emergency funds to maintain the program.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture warns that the available contingency funds are insufficient to provide full benefits. In Michigan, the state health department confirmed that recipients would begin receiving about half their usual benefits over the weekend.

Elizabeth Hertel, director of MDHHS, expressed understanding of the frustration felt by many. “We understand and share the disappointment many households feel about receiving only a portion of their November SNAP benefits. These benefits are a vital lifeline for many Michigan families, especially with the rising cost of food,” she said. Hertel also encouraged those in need to reach out to local food pantries by calling 2-1-1.

According to a report by NPR, the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, a left-leaning research and policy organization, reviewed the partial SNAP benefits plan submitted by the Trump administration. The analysis revealed that approximately 40% of households receiving the maximum benefits would see a reduction of about half, while those with some income might experience even larger cuts or none at all.

Approximately 1.4 million Michigan residents rely on SNAP benefits for food. The state health department stated that SNAP recipients scheduled to receive benefits on the third, fifth, or seventh of the month would get their partial allotment on Saturday, November 8, while others would receive theirs on their usual dates.

Despite the court orders and the partial payment plan for November benefits, federal officials indicated that certain questions remain. “New SNAP applications will be processed from October and November, however, it is unclear whether applicants will receive November benefits and MDHHS awaits further guidance from the USDA,” stated the health department. Additionally, ongoing court cases could further affect the distribution of SNAP benefits in November.
