Michigan is on the brink of experiencing a financial surge in its 2026 election campaigns. This year is set to break records with the amount of money funneled into political races across the state.
The stakes are high as the state gears up to elect a new governor, attorney general, and secretary of state. Additionally, 13 representatives for the U.S. House and a U.S. senator will be decided.
Neil Thanedar, who leads the Michigan Campaign Finance Network, indicates that the influx of campaign funds is expected to be significant, particularly with Michigan playing a key role in the 18 congressional races considered “toss-ups” in the upcoming year.
“Michigan has potentially four of those 18 national toss-up seats here. One of the three national toss-up seats in the senate. One of the biggest toss-up seats in the governor’s race,” noted Thanedar.
These funds are anticipated to fuel a barrage of traditional political advertisements on television, saturating the airwaves as voters prepare to make their choices.
Despite the major financial focus on top-tier campaigns, Thanedar warns that other important races and ballot issues might not garner as much attention. Among these is a ballot initiative aimed at reducing corporate lobbying money in politics.
