Nurses’ Strike at Genesys Hospital Reaches a Significant Milestone
The labor strike involving hundreds of nurses at Henry Ford Health’s Genesys Hospital, located near Flint, has now persisted for three months. On Labor Day, over 700 unionized nurses took to the picket line, while the hospital continued operations with the help of contract nurses.
The ongoing dispute primarily centers on disagreements over nurse-to-patient ratios. Despite numerous bargaining sessions, Henry Ford Health declared that negotiations had reached an impasse and decided to implement its latest contract proposal unilaterally.
This decision prompted the Teamsters union to file charges against the hospital, citing unfair labor practices. Dan Glass, president of Teamsters Local 332, expressed his frustration, stating, “This employer has done absolutely everything to avoid reaching a contract and it can not continue.”
Meanwhile, the hospital reported that several union members have chosen to cross the picket line. A spokesperson for Henry Ford Genesys Hospital emphasized their commitment to good faith negotiations, saying, “We remain as committed as ever to negotiating in good faith and reaching an agreement that supports and recognizes our nurses’ unique, professional expertise and provides the safe, high-quality comprehensive health care the people of Genesee County deserve.”
Both parties are set to reconvene for further negotiations on December 9.
