Nurses’ Strike at Henry Ford Genesys Nears Resolution
The prolonged nurses’ strike that began on Labor Day outside Henry Ford Genesys near Flint might soon come to an end. Recent developments suggest that negotiations have reached an encouraging milestone.
For over 150 days, hundreds of nurses have stood firm on the picket line, advocating for their demands. But a breakthrough was reported last Friday as the hospital and the Teamsters union made significant progress in their discussions.
Both parties expressed optimism in a joint statement over the weekend, although they acknowledged that key issues remain unresolved. Specific details of the negotiation outcomes have yet to be disclosed, but nurse-to-patient ratios have been a major point of contention.
The joint statement concluded with a note of gratitude: “We appreciate everyone’s understanding and we look forward to sharing more when we’re able.”
The strike has seen its share of strife and heated exchanges, reminiscent of the harsh winter conditions. In October, Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien made headlines by harshly criticizing Henry Ford Health, labeling it a “white collar crime syndicate.” In response, a spokeswoman from Henry Ford Health accused O’Brien of neglecting local healthcare needs in favor of advancing the union’s agenda.
Despite the ongoing strike, Henry Ford Genesys has continued to operate, ensuring that emergency services were available, notably during the response to the tragic attack on a church in Grand Blanc last September.
