The University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus continues to be a popular choice for first-year and transfer students as undergraduate applications hit a new high of 115,125 for fall 2026. This milestone marks a significant 29% rise in applications over the past five years. A total of 108,666 first-year candidates and 6,459 transfer applicants aim to join the esteemed institution.

“We are proud to offer an educational experience that, year after year, appeals to so many students from across our state, our country and around the world,” said Adele C. Brumfield, vice provost for enrollment management.

Application numbers have surged by 29% over five years. For fall 2026, first-year applications slightly decreased from 2025 but rose among specific groups: first-generation in-state students by 4%, African American students by 3%, Students of Color by 1%, and international students by 5%.

Transfer applications saw a 5% increase, with notable growth among first-generation students by 9%, Students of Color by 7%, international students by 3%, and low-income students by 7%. Early consideration was sought by 71,893 applicants, who could select Early Decision or Early Action. Early Decision offers a binding commitment upon acceptance, while Early Action provides a nonbinding decision by January.

“Providing two options for early consideration allows high-achieving students to affirm their commitment earlier in the application process so they can focus on their senior year of high school,” said Laurie McCauley, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs.

Regular Decision applicants and those postponed during early rounds will receive results by early April. Admitted students must confirm enrollment by May 1. Financial aid packages are issued swiftly to those who complete necessary forms, reinforcing U-M’s dedication to affordability and access for diverse backgrounds. The Go Blue Guarantee ensures tuition-free education for in-state students with qualifying incomes, enhancing opportunities in the School of Nursing, Marsal Family School of Education, and School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

“As a public institution, U-M is committed to expanding access and addressing affordability for students of all backgrounds,” said Tammie L. Durham Luis, assistant vice provost of enrollment management and executive director of financial aid.

U-M’s admissions team collaborates with colleagues to introduce the U-M experience through on-campus and nationwide events, aiding students and families in making informed college decisions. The fall term commences on Aug. 31, with detailed enrollment data due in October.
