Detroit-Area Synagogue Incident: Details Unfold as Investigation Continues
In a tragic incident at a synagogue near Detroit, a man drove his pickup truck into the building, subsequently exchanging gunfire with a guard before taking his own life. This event, which occurred last Thursday, has drawn significant attention as more details emerge about the man involved, Ayman Ghazali.
On the day of the attack, Ghazali’s former wife made a distressing call to Dearborn Heights police, expressing concern for his well-being. According to a report by WXYZ-TV, she described Ghazali as suicidal and in a state of emotional distress.
During the 911 call, she noted, “I feel like he’s really upset,” further explaining that although she was unaware of his intentions to target the synagogue, she was concerned due to his unstable demeanor. Ghazali, a naturalized U.S. citizen, was reported to have suffered the loss of family members in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon, which could have contributed to his mental state.
The attack took place at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, where Ghazali waited in his truck for two hours before driving it into the building. At the time, dozens of children were inside the synagogue’s early childhood learning center, yet fortunately, none were injured.
Israel’s military has identified Ghazali’s deceased brother, Ibrahim Ghazali, as a Hezbollah commander, following the airstrike. However, the FBI’s Detroit office, handling the investigation of the synagogue incident, has not commented on this characterization.
Ghazali’s ex-wife told authorities, “He’s like suicidal,” and expressed a desire for a welfare check due to his concerning behavior. She mentioned uncertainty about whether he possessed any weapons. Police subsequently visited Ghazali’s residence but found no one present.
As the investigation continues, the synagogue attack remains a deeply troubling event, raising questions about the factors leading to Ghazali’s actions and the broader implications of such an incident.
