Rock Star Ted Nugent Takes Center Stage in Michigan State Hearing

In an unexpected setting for a rock legend, Ted Nugent found himself not at a concert venue, but at a Michigan state House committee hearing. The session focused on allegations against the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and its approach to law enforcement, drawing attention from various stakeholders.

Nugent, known for his 70s rock fame, testified about his experiences with DNR conservation officers. He, along with other witnesses, argued that the officers overstepped legal boundaries while supporting what they described as “anti-conservation” policies. “That kind of jack-booted thuggery is why we have half the deer hunters that we used to have,” Nugent asserted, acknowledging his respect for law enforcement but criticizing certain actions.

In response, Ed Golder, a spokesman for the DNR, issued a statement supporting the agency’s officers, emphasizing their professionalism and rigorous training. Golder highlighted the DNR’s commitment to “science-based natural resource management and the fair application of the law.”

Nugent’s testimony stems from a legal battle involving his 340-acre hunting ranch in Jackson County. The DNR had filed a suit against the ranch, alleging the illegal harvesting of a Russian boar or its hybrid, but a judge dismissed the case due to insufficient evidence.

The committee, tasked with examining the “weaponization” of state government, has invited DNR officials to provide their accounts after reviewing relevant documents. Established after Republicans regained control of the state House, this committee has been addressing various grievances from citizens, ranging from COVID lockdown measures to antisemitism on college campuses.

The hearing provided a platform for Michiganders to voice diverse issues with state government actions, with Nugent’s testimony adding a notable twist to the proceedings.
