Theodore Rippey Appointed Dean of College at University of Michigan-Flint

The University of Michigan-Flint recently announced the appointment of Theodore Rippey as dean of the College of Arts, Sciences & Education. Rippey, previously associate dean at Bowling Green State University, was inspired by significant global events during his college years, leading him to a career in German studies. He expressed enthusiasm for UM-Flint’s innovative environment and its commitment to community engagement.

Rippey, originally from Kansas City, was driven by events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and Tiananmen Square protests to explore German studies. He described a transformative study abroad experience in Germany that taught him the value of communication and perspective-taking.

Rippey credits an English professor for inspiring his academic journey. The professor’s engaging teaching style motivated him to pursue a career as a professor, eventually leading him into academic administration. After teaching German language and cultural history for over a decade, Rippey embraced administrative roles at BGSU, finding fulfillment in collaborative university governance.

His administrative career includes roles as interim dean and vice provost at BGSU. Seeking new challenges, Rippey was drawn to UM-Flint by its vibrant academic community and potential for innovation. He sees the university as a unique partner in Flint’s revitalization, aiming to develop sustainable career paths and strengthen academic connections.

UM-Flint’s Provost, Abby Parrill-Baker, anticipates working with Rippey to advance the college’s academic programs. She sees their partnership as a chance to enhance research and creative endeavors, making the college attractive to both new and transfer students.
