Discussion on GOP Budget Features Notable Donor

U.S. Representative Tom Barrett of Michigan hosted a roundtable aimed at small business discussions, which prominently included a significant Republican donor and political consultant. The event, held on August 20, focused on the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a Republican budget initiative signed by President Donald Trump.

Highlighting the proposed benefits for local enterprises, Barrett stated on X, “We are taking historic action to protect our small businesses, cut costs for working families, and give a much needed boost to Michigan’s economy.” The event also included Small Business Administrator Kelly Loeffler.

Among the attendees was Scott Greenlee, who owns Greenlee Consulting in Grand Rapids. Barrett acknowledged Greenlee’s participation through a post on X, identifying his firm as one of the represented small businesses.

Greenlee, a seasoned political strategist, has been instrumental in various Republican campaigns across Michigan, including that of gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon. His consulting firm has been compensated $200,000 since 2010 for campaign-related services, such as advising and robocall strategies.

Additionally, Greenlee has contributed financially to numerous Republican politicians, including Rep. Barrett, to whom he has donated $1,916.10 this year alone. Greenlee also manages the Patriots Fund, a political action committee backing Barrett as its sole endorsed candidate for 2026.

While the One Big Beautiful Bill Act offers tax reductions for small businesses, critics point out potential drawbacks due to escalating prices and tariffs. The Detroit Regional Chamber reported that approximately 242,000 small businesses are involved in importing goods and are already facing challenges with increased costs and market unpredictability.

Barrett, serving Michigan’s 7th District, encompassing much of Lansing, is seeking re-election next year and is seen as one of the more at-risk Republican incumbents in the upcoming election cycle.
