Trump Demands Control of New Canadian Bridge, Threatens to Block Opening

In a surprising twist in US-Canada relations, President Donald Trump has issued a threat to prevent the opening of a new bridge linking the two nations. The President insists that Canada cede at least half ownership of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a project fully financed by Canada, to the United States.

Trump expressed his demands in a social media message, stating, “We will start negotiations, IMMEDIATELY. With all that we have given them, we should own, perhaps, at least one half of this asset.” He voiced dissatisfaction with the fact that the bridge was constructed without U.S. steel.

The bridge, which is anticipated to open in early 2026, aims to alleviate traffic on existing crossings between Detroit and Windsor. Negotiated by former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, the project has been under construction since 2018 and is expected to enhance connectivity from Montreal to Miami.

The White House and the Canadian Embassy have yet to respond to requests for further comment on Trump’s announcement. The President’s stance comes amid a backdrop of tense trade discussions and ahead of the review of the United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has been vocal against economic coercion by the U.S. on international platforms, highlighting the growing diplomatic friction.

Voices from Michigan’s political arena have reacted strongly to Trump’s statements. Senator Elissa Slotkin called the bridge project a “huge boon” for Michigan’s economy, emphasizing its significance for smooth cargo transit. Slotkin criticized Trump’s threats, suggesting they undermine beneficial bilateral projects.

Although Michigan has historically supported Trump, his recent policies have largely targeted Democratic states. Despite this, his relationship with Michigan’s Democratic Governor, Gretchen Whitmer, remains notably positive.

Stacey LaRouche, spokesperson for Governor Whitmer, confirmed that the bridge will operate under a shared management agreement between Michigan and Canada. LaRouche emphasized its importance as North America’s busiest trade crossing, beneficial to Michigan’s workforce and the auto industry.

Local representatives, including Shri Thanedar and Debbie Dingell, have downplayed Trump’s threats. Thanedar labeled the notion of blocking the bridge as “crazy,” pointing out the essential economic partnership between Michigan and Canada. Dingell expressed anticipation for the bridge’s opening, underscoring its job creation and economic protection roles.
